How Often Should I Replace My Spark Plugs?

Spark plugs are designed for long-term durability, meaning that they only need to be replaced between every 80,000 and 100,000 miles.

However, they can become damaged earlier than expected and require replacements to avoid pricey engine repairs.

Knowing When to Replace Your Spark Plugs

Keep in mind that once your plugs have endured 80,000 miles, they are four fifths worn. The gap in each plug is only going to continue to widen, reducing fuel efficiency and weakening engine performance. For this reason, we recommend that you service your spark plugs every 30,000 miles to monitor their condition.

Note: if you have high-performance plugs, you may need to replace these more often than standard plugs as the electrodes tend to wear faster.

If you notice these symptoms of damaged spark plugs, you may need to replace them sooner than planned to avoid further damage:

  • Your engine light illuminates on the dashboard
  • You have difficulty starting your engine
  • You need to top up your fuel more often than you did before
  • Your engine is audibly idling roughly
  • Your car accelerates slowly
