Castrol Timeline

Castrol…

1899: was established by Charles Wakefield, who set up the C.C. Wakefield oil company in England.

1906: released the first evolution of Castrol oil, which revolutionised the automotive industry in the early twentieth century.

1990-1995: re-introduced its early lubricants under the name ‘Castrol’s Classic Oils’. These oils were designed for vintage, classic and veteran cars and motorcycles. These car oils combined cutting-edge technology with low detergent base mineral oils in varying viscosities.

1920-1940: provided engine oil for 18 of the 23 race cars that broke land speed records during this timeframe, hence the phrase ‘done it with Castrol’.

1960: rebranded the company as Castrol Ltd and opened a state-of-the-art research facility in Bracknell. At this point, Castrol was in a position to manufacture car oils for specific engines.

1968: began selling lubricants, including the new Castrol GTX, in service stations and garage forecourts in over 140 countries.

1970: provided engine oil for 16 out of 23 of the race cars that finished the London to Mexico rally.

2000: became part of BP Group, though Castrol continues to produce oils and other lubricants under its long-established name.
