1882: was established in Wuppertal-Cronenberg, Germany. Carl Gustav Putsch set up a small forge for pliers with two apprentices and a journeyman.

1900: built a separate forge on a neighbouring site.

1914: grew to a team of seven employees.

1927: expanded to a team of 27 employees, who manufactured circa 7,000 pliers per week.

1942: developed and registered the Knipex brand. 

1954: became the European market leader for pliers.

1973: launched the Alligator water-pump pliers, which featured self-locking jaws for nuts and pipes.

1982: celebrated its 100th anniversary with 390 employees.

1984: released the Cobra water-pump pliers, which users can adjust in tiny increments.

1988: introduced the Cobolt compact bolt cutter, which featured a lever-action mechanism to increase a user’s manual force by up to 20 times.

1991: joined with Rennsteig-Werkzeuge, a tools company in Thuringia.

1994: developed the pliers wrench, which featured parallel gripping jaws to secure smooth surfaces.

1996: opened sales branches in China, Russia and America.

2005: won the Wuppertal Enterprise of the Year award for innovation, growth and commitment to the locale.

2007: celebrated its 125th anniversary, having doubled sales over the previous decade. At this point, 800 employees were producing 45,000 pliers each day for global distribution.

2012: set up a new branch in Dubai.

2013: won the Bergischer Ausbildungspreis award for sustainable and fair apprenticeship and training procedures.

2014: won the TÜV Rhineland Employer of Excellence award for the firm’s HR processes. Knipex has continued to win a host of awards and is now the world leader in pliers.
