Based in Munich, Germany, Osram designs and manufactures advanced lighting solutions for cars, motorcycles and trucks. Osram is particularly renowned for its LED, laser and matrix lights and sensors, which have redefined automotive lighting over the last 110 years. Osram’s research into Photonics technology, which delves into visible and invisible light, has played a major part in these automotive lighting solutions. 

Osram also develops technologies to improve traffic guidance systems and is further developing these for use in self-driving vehicles. The company plans to be climate-neutral by 2030. 

Osram’s brands include Osram Opto Semiconductors, Vixar, Osram Continental, Sylvania, Traxon, E:cue, Digital Lumens, Fluence, Claypaky, ADB Stagelight, LED Engin and b,a,g.

1905: acquired the rights for Tungsten filaments for lamps in Austria-Hungary.

1906: developed the Osram incandescent lamp, the OSmium, and expanded into Britain.

1907: sold one third of its shares to GEC, which established a factory in the UK to manufacture Osram lamps. GEC then collaborated with Auer and Just & Hanaman to form the Wolfram (Tungsten) Metal Filament Lamp Works. When the rights to the British Osram trademark were transferred, the firm changed its name to the Osram Lamp Works.

1909: built a factory in Hammersmith, London.

1915: merged with Robertson Lamp Works and Lemington Glass Works under GEC.

1919: adopted the trademark WOTAN and set up a laboratory in Hammersmith.

1920: combined operations with Auergesellschaft, Allgemeine Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) and Siemens & Halske’s electric lamp production teams.

1962: formed Osram General Electric Company, which continues to manufacture lighting for commercial, domestic, industrial and street lighting applications.

1986: started a joint undertaking with GEC, advancing technological developments in lighting enterprises.
