How to Top up Your Engine Coolant

If you let your engine coolant run low, your engine will be at risk of internal rust build-up and overheating.

Luckily, topping up your engine coolant is quick and easy. Follow these simple steps to refill yours. You won’t even need any equipment.

Engine Coolant Tips

  • Only refill your engine coolant when the engine is cold.
  • Park your vehicle on a flat surface before checking engine coolant level.
  • Use the correct type of coolant for your car. Also, don’t mix coolants. Blending different types can produce dangerous chemicals.
  • If your engine coolant level drops suddenly, take your car to a garage.
  • A good-quality engine coolant will be effective for approximately three/four years. Buy a new coolant if you are still using the same bottle after this point.
  • You can buy pre-mixed engine coolant or mix it yourself with distilled water. Most brands recommend a 50/50 mix, though some suggest a blend of 70% coolant and 30% distilled water – especially for use in cold weather.

Step One

Step Three

Check whether the engine coolant reaches a point between the minimum and maximum markers on the tank.

Step Four

Refill the engine coolant up to the maximum marker. You may like to use a funnel or watering can for easy pouring. Retighten the cap.
