Fuel Filter Type: What Filters Do

A fuel filter collects dirt, dust and debris before it can enter the fuel system. This prevents contamination in the engine that would otherwise lead to costly damage. It’s vital that you replace your fuel filter when servicing your car.

But what makes fuel filter types different?

Which Fuel Filter Type?

There are two main fuel filter types. One is a plastic or metal container that holds a filtration medium. These filters are designed to be replaced, instead of serviced.

The other type is a cartridge filter that holds a replaceable filter. The metal filter container can be opened whenever the filter element needs to be replaced.

Petrol fuel filters are usually cartridge or canister shaped, while diesel fuel filters are more often bowl shaped. The fuel filter that you need varies depending on your vehicle’s fuel delivery system. Carburetted engines use a vacuum to suck fuel through rubber hoses, into the filter, and then into the engine through an inlet tube.

On the other hand, vehicles with electronic fuel injection systems squirt fuel into the cylinders using the injectors. In such high-pressure systems, the fuel lines are metal. The fuel lines connect to the filter via threaded fittings.
