1870: was established as the Standard Oil Company in Ohio.

1882: lubricated Thomas Edison’s first central generating system.

1885: relocated to New York and developed engine oils for the newest generators and motors, which operated at speeds of up to 1,000 rpm.

1906: provided lubricants for Wilbur and Orville Wright to take their first flight in North Carolina.

1911: divided into 34 companies, including the infamous Jersey Standard.

1920: produced the first commercial petrochemical – rubbing alcohol.

1926: released a new brand of fuel: Esso.

1937: began manufacturing butyl, the artificial rubber that is now used in tyres, surgical tape and protective coatings.

1952: launched Uniflo motor oil, the first multigrade engine oil for both winter and summer use.

1958: provided the aviation fuel for Pan American Airways’ first trans-Atlantic Boeing 707 flight from New York to London.

1966: rebranded as the Mobil Oil Corporation.

1972: rebranded Jersey Standard as the Exxon Corporation.

1974: released Mobil 1, the world’s leading synthetic engine oil.  

1976: invented the process for converting methanol into high-octane petrol using a ZSM-5 catalyst.

1986: invented 3D microtomography, an imaging technique for studying internal structures of opaque objects.

1997: launched Speedpass, an electronic system that activates fuel pumps and automatically charges purchases to credit cards.

1999: combined Exxon and Mobil to form ExxonMobil Corporation.

2001: developed the Scanfining process, which removes over 95% of sulfur from petrol.

2002: released its Global Climate and Energy Project to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

2016: developed reverse osmosis technology in partnership with Georgia Tech to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2020: maximised isopropyl alcohol production for other firms to produce hand sanitisers and other PPE in COVID-19 response efforts.
